WASHINGTON, D.C. – RealEstateRama – The Malta Housing Authority participated in the conference titled ”Improving Affordable Housing in the Mediterranean”, organised locally by SOS Malta and classified under the outcome of ACF Regional Initiatives.
The Conference offered a unique platform for representatives coming from various mediterranean countries including Italy, Portugal, Greece, Spain and Malta to exchange experiences and lessons learned in addressing challenges towards housing affordability. This event served as an exemplary platform for Keynotes and Panel Discussions by experts in the field of policymaking, housing studies and leaders of the sector which brought about interesting housing trends and noteable events in the different participating countries.
The Housing Authority represented by the Chief Executive Officer Matthew Zerafa participated in the panel “Affordable Housing Policies in Action” alongside Meriç Özgüne? – Program Manager at Major Development Agency of Thessaloniki and Jorge Malheiros – Director at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon.
Giving a clear representation of the situation and progress in Malta’s approach towards Affordable Housing, the CEO explained Malta’s distinctive society and context within which market shortfalls are identified and addressed. Housing is not just merely bricks and mortar; it is the cornerstone of stable communities and the foundation upon which dreams are built. The Housing Authority’s mission statement “To provide and sustain decent social and affordable housing opportunities, promote stability, and support social mobility.” guides the Authority in its work delivering a portfolio of over 16 schemes and a comprehensive Social Accomodation programme.
This event clearly shed light on the different approaches being put into play in our respective countries. Yet, a clear united vision which views housing as a right not a privilege – prevails.
The Housing Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to transform the reality of housing in Malta and collaborate with our Mediterranean Partners to ensure our affordable housing policies do not just exist on paper — but thrive in action, touching lives, and igniting positive change.
The conference was organised by SOS Malta, Bodossaki Foundation, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, SolidarityNow and
Bissaya Barreto Foundation.
