High Performance Buildings Track Offers a New Perspective on Sustainability

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 19, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International will offer an extensive educational program and unparalleled professional development opportunities at the 2015 BOMA International Annual Conference & Expo, which takes place June 28-30 in Los Angeles.

Designed by industry experts for property professionals at every stage of their career, the conference curriculum will feature more than 50 sessions organized across six distinct educational tracks. Session topics will include: attracting and retaining tenants; increasing operational performance in commercial buildings; leveraging new technology to increase sustainability; developing professional skills to enhance a career in commercial real estate; implementing operational best practices in industrial properties; and more.

“Whether new to the industry or decades into a commercial real estate career, everyone can benefit from the insights, best practices and practical solutions that BOMA International’s conference education offers,” commented BOMA International Chair John G. Oliver, BOMA Fellow, managing principal for Oliver & Company. “With the commercial real estate industry continuing to evolve at a rapid pace, property professionals cannot afford to miss the important conversations on the latest marketplace trends that will take place during these education sessions.”

New this year is the High Performance Buildings track, which is an expansion and update of the Sustainability and Energy Management track offered at previous BOMA International conferences. This new education track reflects a shift in the way the commercial real estate industry now approaches sustainability as it moves from simply reducing the environmental impact of a building to adding asset value by harnessing the power of sustainable practices to conserve natural resources, reduce operational expenses and improve tenant satisfaction.

?Conference attendees can either choose one track that best suits a single educational objective or mix and match sessions from each track to create a customized educational experience. The tracks featured at the upcoming conference include:

  • Asset Management
    • Session spotlight: At “The Art of Creating Successful Deals,” attendees will learn tactics and strategies for becoming consistently effective negotiators, from learning to set expectations to identifying the client’s best alternatives. Presenters will offer lessons on responding to common tactics like “nibbling,” “swapping” and “good cop, bad cop” and examine what the latest research reveals about how gender differences influence a negotiation.
  •  High Performance Buildings (Sponsored by Interior Removal Specialist, Inc.)
    • Session spotlight: While most buildings are prepared for traditional risks such as fire and life safety, management teams also should prepare for non-traditional risks such as market obsolescence, energy price fluctuations and extreme weather events such as droughts. Join a panel of experts in “New Building Operational Risks: How Can You Fight Back?” to learn more about how these risks can threaten an asset, gain insight into upcoming market trends and discover a holistic and informed approach to sustainable risk management.
  • Industrial Property Management
    • Session spotlight: Attracting and retaining talented employees is an integral part of a company’s success. At “Proper Staffing for Industrial Management,” a panel of industrial experts will discuss how proper staffing levels create customer satisfaction and increase efficiency and productivity. The session will offer advice on how to find talented industrial property managers by identifying desired skills and asking targeted interview questions.
  • Tenant Relations and Retention (Sponsored by Orkin, LLC)
    • Session spotlight: How a tenant designs, builds out and occupies space can make a major difference in their energy usage and operating costs. However, communications challenges, missing data and a lack of understanding can prevent tenants, owners and managers from maximizing performance. In “Unlocking the Value of High Performance Tenant Spaces,” experts will help attendees identify the tools and resources they need to create efficient tenant spaces.

To make sure every attendee gets the maximum benefit from their attendance, every session qualifies for CPM, RPA, FMA, SMA, SMT and ARM renewal and continuing professional development credits. Several sessions are approved for LEED credential maintenance and renewal of the Building Operator Certification (BOC). Some sessions also contribute to the requirements for real estate license renewal in many U.S. states and Canada.

The 2015 BOMA International Annual Conference & Expo is commercial real estate’s most important event of the year. More than 450 exhibits by leading manufacturers and suppliers at the BOMA Every Building Expo will help attendees find solutions to operational challenges and strategies to enhance asset performance. At Monday’s General Session, “The Revitalization of Downtown LA,” a panel of experts will discuss the driving forces behind Los Angeles’ downtown renaissance and how other downtown districts can follow the city’s successful revitalization model. The conference also will feature a performance by one of most recognizable entertainers in the world, Jay Leno, who will kick off the Sunday General Session. Visit www.BOMAConference.org for more information.
