32-acre retail hub provides jobs and community anchor to the city of South Gate

SOUTH GATE, Calif. – October 28, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Construction on the Nadel-designed Azalea Regional Shopping Center is now complete, bringing a new 32-acre retail hub to the city of South Gate, California. Located at 4635 Firestone Blvd., and owned by Primestor Development, Inc., the project includes more than 370,000 square feet of retail space and 37 stores. Construction on the site kicked off in September 2012 and was completed in August 2014.

Major tenants of the center include Forever 21, Sketchers, Wet Seal, Marshalls and ULTA. Restaurant tenants include Blaze Pizza, Habit Burger, Compañia de Café, TGI Fridays, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Yogurtland and In-N-Out Burger.

“The intent of this project was to create a dynamic shopping experience, providing jobs and more retail choices for the local community,” said Greg Lyon, principal and design director with Nadel, Inc. “What South Gate residents now have is a center with a contemporary architectural design that creates a sophisticated and immersive environment.”

Primestor’s goal was to develop an unparalleled, innovative retail experience not currently found anywhere else in California. Nadel achieved the goal with a visually stimulating space with modern architecture that integrates lighting and sound to create a multi-sensory experience for shoppers.

“Nadel’s project team worked closely with the landscape architect, to ensure the building exterior and the landscape would blend into a cohesive aesthetic,” Lyon said. “Together, we utilized advanced design technologies to create plant palettes and the largest installation of ‘living walls’ currently found on the west coast.”
Landscape design elements include concrete walls in varying heights to accent primary pedestrian entries, and integral lighting. Additional amenities include a pop-jet fountain, recessed amphitheater, reflection pool, lounge seating areas, and access to complimentary Wi-Fi.

The project utilized innovative building materials such as repurposed barn wood, corten steel and aluacobond panels as decorating elements. The use of recycled materials and reclaimed water contributed toward LEED® credits for this project, as it is intended to be LEED® certified.

In addition to Lyon, Nadel’s architectural team included David Anderson, AIA, retail studio director. The landscape design was completed by Conceptual Design & Planning Company (CDPC).
