FRESNO, Calif. – RealEstateRama – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-21) announced a nearly $202 million federal grant through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law enacted in November 2021. This grant will help advance California’s high-speed rail along the City of Shafter and improve the well-being of underserved communities in the San Joaquin Valley.

“California is investing in the future of transportation and with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law we are advancing the nation’s first high-speed rail project,” said Costa. “This federal grant reflects a commitment from the Biden-Harris Administration to bringing modern transportation into the 21st century starting here in California’s San Joaquin Valley. I’m proud to have worked with our federal and state partners to secure this grant to advance this project.”

This federal grant will help complete the design, purchase right-of-way, and construct six grade separations in the City of Shafter (Kern County) to separate car and pedestrian traffic from current freight trains and future high-speed rail trains. Specifically, this grant will:

  • Construct six grade separations at Poplar Avenue, Fresno Avenue, Shafter Avenue, Central Avenue, Lerdo Highway, and Riverside Street.
  • Funding will also help reduce the environmental and health impacts of freight movement and railroad operations.

Costa has been a longtime advocate for California’s High-Speed Rail project and has secured over $270 million through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. He wrote letters of support and advocated to secure this federal grant to advance the construction of the nation’s first high-speed rail project. Learn more about the project HERE.
