HUD AND CENSUS BUREAU REPORT NEW RESIDENTIAL SALES IN OCTOBER 2017
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Census Bureau today jointly announced the following new residential sales statistics for October 2017. Sales of new single-family houses in October 2017 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau.
New Home Sales Rate Reaches 10-Year High in October
Sales of newly built, single-family homes in October rose 6.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000 units from a downwardly revised September reading, according to newly released data by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. This is the highest sales pace since October 2007. Year-to-date, new home sales are 8.9 percent above their level over the same period last year

The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that the Republican Senate fiscal year 2018 District of Columbia appropriations bill does not contain any anti-home-rule riders, exempts D.C. from a shutdown in fiscal year 2019, and provides funds for many of Norton’s legislative priorities. Unlike in past years, the bill was released by the Senate Appropriations Committee before being marked up by the committee, likely signaling the committee will not mark up the bill and it instead will be used as the basis for negotiations with the House on any final spending bill.

According to a report released today by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the private construction industry’s value added as a percentage of the nation’s real gross domestic product (GDP) rose to 4 percent in 2016, the highest level since 2009. The report also shows annual growth in real construction spending, which rose 3.5 percent in 2016.

Forty-one states added construction jobs between October 2016 and October 2017, while 26 states added construction jobs between September and October, continuing a pattern of widespread but uneven growth in industry employment, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data released today. The association’s chief economist suggested that recent job gains would have been more widespread if enough qualified workers were available.
Mayor Bowser Launches “Home for the Holidays” Effort to Place 400 District Homeless Residents...
On Monday, November 20, at 10:30 am., Mayor Muriel Bowser will officially launch “Home for the Holidays,” a city-wide effort to place 400 of the District’s most vulnerable households in permanent housing during the holiday season. DC Department of Human Services (DHS) soft launched the initiative through social media and landlord outreach on November 15, 2017. This targeted campaign will run through January 15, 2018. According to the 2017 Point-in-Time Count, nearly 7,000 DC residents do not have a place to call home.
