Norton Begins Defense of D.C. Home Rule After Slew of Bills Introduced, Files Amendment...
The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that Norton has filed an amendment at the House Rules Committee to H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017, to strike the provision making the bill applicable to the District of Columbia. The Rules Committee will hold a markup today, Monday, January 23, 2017, at 5:00 p.m., in H-313, to decide what amendments, if any, will be allowed to be offered when bill goes to the floor tomorrow.

On First Day in Office, Trump Makes it More Expensive for Americans to Buy...
After being sworn into office today, the administration of President Donald Trump moved to raise Federal Housing Administration, or FHA, premiums for new homebuyers by 25 basis points. This action, which reverses an Obama administration move to lower premiums by 25 basis points, will cost a new homebuyer an additional $500 on their housing payments in 2017. The lower premium rate, the FHA estimated, could have made homeownership affordable for an additional 250,000 first-time homebuyers in the next three years

The Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a settlement with Magellan Pipeline Company, L.P., for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act related to gasoline, diesel and jet fuel spills in Texas City, Texas, Nemaha, Neb. and El Dorado, Kan. Magellan has agreed to complete approximately $16 million of injunctive relief across its 11,000-mile pipeline system and pay a $2 million civil penalty.

Remodeling Market Optimism Remains Positive in Fourth Quarter
The National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Remodeling Market Index (RMI) posted a reading of 53 in the fourth quarter of 2016, a decrease of four points from the previous quarter, but on par with levels seen in the first half of 2016. Nationwide Housing Production Up 11.3 Percent in December on Multifamily Surge
A surge in multifamily production resulted in overall nationwide housing starts rising 11.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.23 million units, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. Single-family starts dropped 4 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 795,000 units

The Justice Department announced today a $5.28 billion settlement with Credit Suisse related to Credit Suisse’s conduct in the packaging, securitization, issuance, marketing and sale of residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) between 2005 and 2007. The resolution announced today requires Credit Suisse to pay $2.48 billion as a civil penalty under the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA).
