DELHI, INDIA — (RealEstateRama) — Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the exclusive global certification body forLEED projects and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), announced The LEED Performance Challenge today, which enables Indian cities to competitively share their latest performance data and benchmark it against other cities locally, nationally and globally. The LEED Performance Challenge aims to develop more sustainable, healthy buildings, communities and cities and to benchmark how they are planned, developed and measured against global standards.
The LEED Performance Challenge uses the LEED rating system—the world’s most widely recognized and used green building program—to evaluate a city’s ability to implement energy efficiency, water preservation, waste management, health and wellness, sustainable sites and other important infrastructure elements. This new platform for cities is being hosted by the Smartnet portal, a path-breaking initiative by the Ministry of Urban Development in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs and other GOI initiatives instituted to support the development of smart cities across India, and to create a resource-rich ecosystem of learning, sharing and disseminating knowledge among city managers, practitioners, citizens and other stakeholders in the urban transformation of India.
“Every story about LEED is a story of leadership and the many leaders committed to creating a greener, more sustainable and smart future for all,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, chief operating officer, USGBC and president of GBCI. “We are grateful to be aligned with the Government of India on the LEED Performance Challenge, and we believe this is yet another opportunity to accelerate the development of sustainable cities on a global scale and to pass on the legacy of sustainability to our children and for the generations to come.”
City authorities have until Aug. 31, 2016 to collate and submit their information. A representative of the winning city will attend USGBC’s annual Greenbuild conference in Los Angeles, Calif., Oct. 5–7, 2016. Greenbuild is one of the world’s largest sustainability conferences, well attended by a global audience in excess of 20,000 people.
“GBCI is committed to India and extremely proud to present the LEED Performance Challenge,” said Mili Majumdar, managing director of GBCI India. “For more than two decades, LEED has enabled building professionals to think and build sustainably. As LEED gradually established itself in more than 160 cities worldwide, it evolved from a strategic-based model to one that is performance-based. Today, it is a powerful and effective catalyst for sustainable market transformation on all levels, from individual buildings to neighborhoods and cities. We are proud to present this timely, data-based LEED Performance Challenge hosted on the Smartnet portal.”
