Why:
In exactly one year, the laws that govern affordable housing in New York State will expire. Up until 2011, when the laws come up for renewal, they have been continuously and pragmatically weakened through legislation supported by the Landlord lobby and real estate interests. When the laws were renewed in 2011, this weakening was stopped through aggressive grassroots campaigning by tenants supported by social justice organizations.
In 2015, we must stop the loss of affordable housing and remove loopholes that allow for landlord fraud and harassment. Further, we must ensure that new laws will provide tenant protections that will sustain rent affordability for middle and low income New Yorkers, and maintain our unique neighborhoods and communities across the five boroughs and surrounding suburban counties.
Interviews:
Assembly Member Keith Wright, Members of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Latino and Asian Caucus and tenant leaders will be available to answer reporters’ questions.
