Luetkemeyer Holds Field Hearing in New Orleans entitled “New Orleans: Ten Years After the Storm”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 10, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — On Friday, Chairman of the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03) convened a field hearing in New Orleans, LA entitled “New Orleans: Ten Years After the Storm.”

“Just a little over 10 years ago, much of New Orleans was underwater. The people of the Gulf Coast not only had to deal with keeping their families together, but they had to try to look ahead and imagine rebuilding their lives in the region they love. Ten years later, there are some successes, and there have been some failures. I had the opportunity to visit communities that have been redeveloped and are today serving as cornerstones of the city. Unfortunately, there are still areas of New Orleans that seem to have been scarcely touched since the hurricane, despite the approximately $120 billion in aid to victims of the 2005 storms. The purpose of the hearing was to hear from the witnesses about the success and failures in rebuilding housing in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The testimony showed, without question, that government at all levels should have done a better job. Moving forward, with the input of all levels of government, faith-based groups, and non-profits, it will allow the citizens to redevelop their communities. It’s time to learn from what we’ve experienced and develop 21st century solutions for 21st century issues.”
