Mayor Bowser Joins DC Water to Kick Off DC Green Infrastructure Project
The DC Water Project is the Largest Green Building Initiative to Protect DC Waterways
(WASHINGTON, DC) – (RealEstateRama) — On Monday, October 23, at 10 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Administration and local officials to highlight the progress of DC Clean Rivers Project, a DC Water program to prevent stormwater and reduce combined sewage from overflowing into Rock Creek Park and the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. Located at a major green infrastructure site in the Brightwood community in Ward 4, Mayor Bowser will tour the construction of the permeable pavement, disconnected downspouts, and rain gardens for bio-retention.
DC Clean Rivers Project will improve waterways by reducing combined sewage overflows (CSOs) volume by 96 percent system-wide in the average year and by 98 percent in the Anacostia River. The initiative includes green infrastructure and nearly 18 miles of tunnels – larger than metro tunnels – that are constructed more than 100 feet below the ground. The tunnels are designed to capture CSOs during heavy rain and transport the flows to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The project will also provide flood relief to neighborhoods in the Northeast boundary section of DC such as Bloomingdale, LeDroit Park, Trinidad, and Ivy City.
The DC Clean Rivers Project is complementary to Sustainable DC, the citywide plan that details how Washington, DC will be the greenest, healthiest, and most livable city by year 2032. Under the Bowser Administration, 65 percent of DC neighborhoods are walkable; 58 percent of commuter trips are by bike, walking, or transit; 82 percent of residents are food secure; and greenhouse gas emissions are down by 25 percent, reducing greenhouse gases by 80 percent by year 2050. Mayor Bowser’s commitment to green workforce development programs is part of the Administration’s overall effort to build a more sustainable Washington, DC while getting more residents on pathways to the middle class. The District has launched the Climate Ready DC plan, entered into one of the largest municipal onsite solar projects in the U.S., and completed the largest wind power purchase agreement deal of its kind ever entered into by an American city.
