Nadel Architects-Designed Multifamily Complex Now Open in Marina del Rey
Torrance, CA – November 27, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Designed by Nadel Architects, the Shores multifamily development is now open for rent at 4201 Via Marina in Marina del Rey, Calif. The $165 million complex, located just blocks away from both Venice Beach and the Marina del Rey docks, was created by one of the area’s first development teams – Jerry Epstein and actor Kirk Douglas, developers and owners of Shores, LLC; and Herb Nadel, architect and founding principal of Nadel Architects. Replacing a series of two-story, garden-style apartment buildings developed by Epstein and Douglas in the 1960s, the completion of Shores addresses the demand for higher-density, contemporary apartment living near the Pacific Ocean.

“Our design drew from the nautical motif in the original 1960s development, and highlights the project’s close proximity to the marina and Los Angeles,” said Dale Yonkin, project director with Nadel. “Sail-like elements, and a dramatic color scheme based on semaphore flags, result in a design that maintains timeless concepts while blending with a more modern, California coastal theme.”
The new complex consists of 12 inter-connected, five-story buildings situated on an eight-acre site. Of the 544 units, various one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans are offered—ranging from 750 square feet to 1,410 square feet in size.
“Designing a complex of this size means accommodating a large number of residents and guests,” added Yonkin. “We paid special attention to create an environment that had an open feel with spacious areas, while still incorporating a sense of community within the complex as a whole. The functionality and efficiency of the design provide the maximum amount of space for the common and living areas.”
In addition to spacious indoor residences, the complex features a two-acre, park-like courtyard with lush greenery, open space and outdoor amenities that include fire pits, barbecues, a bocce court, a pool and two spas. Residents will have the opportunity to socialize and naturally engage their neighbors within a number of conversation spaces throughout the courtyard, community rooms and gym.
“We are thrilled with the success of Nadel’s design team in realizing our vision for Shores,” said David O. Levine, chief of staff to Jerry B. Epstein. “We are finding that our residents want to connect with each other, so our courtyard, sky terraces and resident events are all designed to facilitate a sense of community. Yet, at the same time, our design team, led by Nadel Architects, also created wonderful private spaces, where our residents can curl up with their laptop in our park-like courtyard or relax on their spacious balcony patio.”
In addition to Yonkin, the Nadel project team included Don Dildine, project manager; and Afsaneh Riahi and John Yang, project designers.
