New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple to Attend National Summit on Coastal Infrastructure Issues
New Hanover County, NC – October 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple will join a bipartisan group of more than 30 local officials to raise awareness of coastal infrastructure management challenges. He was invited to join a delegation of elected local leaders from coastal states attending the Rising Tides Summit in Hampton, New Hampshire on October 23-25.
With more than 123 million Americans living in coastal shoreline counties, infrastructure management has become a national concern. “Responsible coastal management is key to our County’s vision to be a vibrant, diverse coastal community, committed to building a sustainable future for generations to come,” Zapple said in accepting the invitation to participate.
He continued, “We have three coastal towns within our county and are known as “hurricane alley” so when the sea is higher, the impact and storm surge from hurricanes is greater. We need to continue to ensure that our beaches are designed to mitigate predicted flooding.” Zapple has also expressed an interest in discussing insurance related issues at the conference, and sharing the experiences of our area during the recent coastal storm. Carolina Beach Councilman Steve Shuttleworth and Kill Devil Hills Mayor Sheila Davies will also attend from North Carolina.
Commissioner Zapple was invited to participate in this bipartisan event by co-hosts Mayor Bob Lister (D – Portsmouth, NH) and State Senator Nancy Stiles (R – Hampton, NH). During the summit, he will collaborate with local leaders from nearly all the coastal states and federal agencies that play a crucial role in helping communities address coastal challenges including:
- Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Administrator, NOAA
- Roy Wright, Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, FEMA
- Jonathan White, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.)
- Lawrence Cocchieri, Deputy Director of the Army Corps of Engineers, National Planning Center for Coastal Storm Risk Management
The Rising Times Summit is invite-only but open to the media. For more information visit www.risingtides2015.com. Commissioner Zapple will be available to the media during the conference.
