NLIHC Board Member to Testify in Support of HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration
November 3, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — At a hearing today, National Low Income Housing Coalition board member and legal services attorney Charles Elsesser will testify before a House panel in support of an Administration proposal on public housing conversion.
Public housing conversion will allow private investment in the nation’s public housing stock. NLIHC supports this conversion demonstration as a way to test, evaluate and identify ways to allow PHAs to preserve this housing stock while providing residents input in the process, protecting the nation’s investment, and continuing to serve the lowest income households in an affordable way.
In 2009, there were 10 million extremely low income households but only 6.5 million units affordable to this income group. At the same time, since 2000, HUD has approved the demolition or disposition of more than 100,000 units of public housing.
Mr. Elsesser will testify to the merits of the HUD proposal, such as the provisions for resident participation and location choice, and for long-term use and affordability restrictions.
