Norton to Speak at Brookfield Properties Groundbreaking at The Yards
WASHINGTON, D.C. – RealEstateRama – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a Brookfield Properties groundbreaking for a 300,000 square-foot headquarters for Chemonics International at The Yards in Southeast D.C. tomorrow, February 27th, at 11:00 a.m. Chemonics will be the first tenant in the new property, which officially begins Phase II of development on the waterfront. Chemonics will employ more than 1,200 employees specializing in fields such as agriculture, economic development, education, finance, health care, and IT. The building will include new ground-level retail, outdoor patios and green areas, meeting spaces, and parking. Since the opening of Yards Park in 2010, The Yards has added hundreds of residential units, as well as retailers and restaurants. Norton’s emphasis on getting federal land for District use has led to the revitalization of many D.C. neighborhoods.
“Getting federal land for the District has been a top priority for my time in Congress,” Norton said. “With Phase II of The Yards underway, we can celebrate the neighborhood’s revitalization. I have done similar work with neighborhoods like the Wharf, the Capital Riverfront, NoMa, and Walter Reed. As a result, economic development from these projects is bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and income from businesses and tourists.”
