PIMA Bulletin Compares Performance of Polyiso Insulation to Unfaced Mineral Wool Board Insulation in Commercial Roof Applications

Comparison across seven categories shows clear benefits of Polyiso

WASHINGTON, DC, September 17, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — The Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) today announced the release of a Performance Bulletin evaluating Polyiso and unfaced mineral wool board insulation for use in commercial roof applications. The bulletin assesses the following criteria: thermal performance (R-value), fire performance, compressive strength, weight per installed R-value, water resistance, environmental benefit and economic value.

Polyiso

The bulletin, titled “Polyiso and Unfaced Mineral Wool Board Insulation in Commercial Roof Applications,” highlights that:

• Polyiso roof insulation provides over 45% more R-value per inch than unfaced mineral wool board, meaning less insulation and fewer truckloads of material are required.

• Polyiso has a much higher compressive strength, resisting damage and deformation duringinstallation and increasing insulation effectiveness.

• Covering the same roof area with an equivalent R-value, unfaced mineral wool board is over 4 1/2 times heavier than Polyiso roof insulation and requires twice as many boards, making it more difficult to handle, costlier to install, and necessitates additional structural weight capacity.

• Polyiso foam boards have low water absorption, resulting in more stable R-value and retention of mechanical strength compared to porous mineral wool boards.

• Polyiso requires 3 times less energy to manufacture than unfaced mineral wool board, reducing its Global Warming Potential.

“In every category, Polyiso outperforms unfaced mineral wool board insulation used for roof applications,” said Jared Blum, President of PIMA. “With Polyiso you get better performance for lower cost in as well as versatility and value that are unmatched.”

A copy of the bulletin “Polyiso and Unfaced Mineral Wool Board Insulation in Commercial Roof Applications,” is available for download at PIMA’s website (www.polyiso.org) and is also available from PIMA members.

About Polyiso
Polyiso is a rigid foam insulation used in over 70 percent of commercial roof construction, in commercial sidewall construction and in residential construction across North America.

About PIMA
For over 25 years, the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) has served as the unified voice of the rigid polyiso industry, proactively advocating for safe, cost-effective, sustainable, and energy-efficient construction. PIMA’s members, who first came together in 1987, include a synergistic partnership of polyiso manufacturers and industry suppliers.
