President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2017 Budget Proposes Major Investments in Infrastructure, New Fund to Modernize Information Technology Systems
Administrator Roth: “Budget strengthens our nation’s public buildings, secures and modernizes federal IT systems”
WASHINGTON – February 10, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Denise Turner Roth announced significant new investments that are a part of the President’s fiscal year 2017 budget request. The proposed budget is focused on tackling our nation’s greatest challenges by making smart investments in federal infrastructure and modernizing the federal government’s most at-risk legacy IT systems.
“The President’s budget includes investments necessary to further strengthen our nation’s real estate portfolio while promoting development in communities across the country,” said GSA Administrator Roth. “GSA will also be able to more effectively bring federal IT systems into the 21st century. Once enacted, GSA will be positioned to better provide the services and solutions that allow the government to more effectively tackle our shared challenges.”
The proposed budget reflects the administration’s commitment to smart and strategic investment in our nation’s infrastructure, as well as addressing the government’s common IT challenges. The investments include:
- $759 million for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Headquarters consolidation project.
- $267 million to deliver a new and highly efficient headquarters for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the next phase of the Enhanced Plan for the consolidation of the Department of Homeland Security at St. Elizabeths in Washington.
- $248 million to complete the modernization of the Calexico, Calif. U.S. Land Port of Entry, meeting one of Custom and Border Protection’s highest priority needs and improving safety.
- More than $91 million in proposed investments for two facilities in Detroit, MI. This includes an $81 million upgrade to a GSA building previously purchased for $1, allowing GSA to draw 800 new employees to the neighborhood.
As part of the Administration’s commitment to tackle the ongoing challenge of effectively delivering information technology across the federal government, the President’s budget also includes a new $3.1 billion IT Modernization Fund that will retire, replace, or modernize the federal government’s most at-risk legacy IT systems.
The proposal also includes more than $260 million for GSA’s appropriated accounts. This encompasses $64 million for the Office of Government-wide Policy to support the federal government’s adoption of shared services and continue to drive evidence-based evaluation. In addition, it includes $58 million for the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies to deliver effective and accessible technology services to the American people.
