The Modular Building Institute August 2015 Building of the Month: Mojave Solar Project
Hinkley, CA – September 10, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Modular Building Institute (MBI) has recognized Universal Modular Building Solutions’ Mojave Solar Project Administration & Control Buildings as the August 2015 Modular Building of the Month. This project also won first place in the Permanent Special Application category at MBI’s annual Awards of Distinction, which are recognized at the association’s annual conference and expo, World of Modular.
This US Department of Energy-funded Mojave Solar Project is located in a remote area of the California Mojave Desert, where environmental concerns were at the forefront. By using modular technology, Universal Modular Building Solutions was able to minimize the impact to the environment by substantially reducing the onsite workforce and traffic. Native American archaeological monitors were employed full-time on this project to supervise and prevent any disruption of the site and disturbance to the native flora and fauna.
This project was originally designed as a pre-engineered steel building, but plans were converted for modular construction due to the remote site, schedule, and cost. Each building is two stories, for a total of 8,996 square feet: 7144 square feet of operations and administrative space, and 1822 square feet of second floor control room space. Modular technology allowed a substantial reduction of onsite labor, vehicular traffic, construction equipment, and construction material waste.
These buildings house administrative offices, mechanical & electrical room, kitchen, break room, male & female shower and locker rooms with restrooms, upstairs solar plant control room with wall-mounted video screens. In addition to interior and exterior stairways, both buildings feature enclosed modular elevator to meet ADA requirements. The exteriors are 26-gauge wall panel siding with baked enamel finish to match the surrounding desert environment. Twenty-eight modules of varying sizes were used to meet the customer’s specific layout. The modules were installed on solid concrete stem wall and internal piers with a finished floor at 8 inches above grade.
The Modular Building Institute recognized Universal Modular Building Solutions’ project as first place in the Permanent Special Application category at the Awards of Distinction for creating a state-of-the-art facility with minimal disturbance to the surrounding natural environment.
