INLAND EMPIRE, CA – RealEstateRama –Three of Inland Empire Utilities Agency’s (IEUA/Agency) facilities were recently recognized by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies for outstanding compliance to water quality requirements. Carbon Canyon Water Recycling Facility and Regional Water Recycling Plant No. 1 and 5 were awarded 2023 Peak Performance Awards for excellence in wastewater treatment as measured by compliance with the Agency’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.

“The Peak Performance Awards program offers national recognition for the hard work and commitment of IEUA staff to public and environmental health,” said IEUA Board President Marco Tule. “NACWA is a national leader in environmental sustainability and cost-effective policy development that supports the protection of public health and development of a high-quality water supply for the agencies they represent. We are honored to be recognized by them for the vital role our staff play in the community.

For over 50 years, NACWA?has been the nation’s recognized leader in legislative, regulatory, legal, and communications advocacy on the full spectrum of clean water issues. The awards recently distributed during NACWA’s 2024 Utility Leadership Conference reflect compliance for calendar year 2023, where three IEUA facilities were presented with the following awards:

Platinum Peak Performance Award – Presented to Carbon Canyon Water Recycling Facility (CCWRF) for 100% compliance with the Agency’s NPDES permit for between 5 and 35 consecutive years.

CCWRF, operational since 1992 and located in the city of Chino, has the capacity to treat up to 12 million gallons of wastewater per day and serves the areas of Chino, Chino Hills, Montclair, and Upland. CCWRF has maintained 100% compliance for the sixth consecutive year.

Silver Peak Performance Award – Presented to Regional Water Recycling Plant No. 1 (RP-1) and Regional Water Recycling Plant No. 5 (RP-5) for five or fewer violations of the Agency’s NPDES permit in one year.

RP-1, located in the city of Ontario and in operation since 1948, is IEUA’s largest facility and can treat up to 44 million gallons of wastewater per day. RP-1 serves Chino, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland. A significant portion of recycled water produced at RP-1 helps to supply water to IEUA’s Groundwater Recharge Program ensuring sustainability of our local Chino Basin groundwater supplies.

RP-5, operational since 2004 in the city of Chino, has the capacity to treat up to 16.3 million gallons of wastewater per day and serves the communities of Chino, Chino Hills, and Ontario. RP-5 is currently undergoing significant expansion while continuing its regular operations. Its ultimate buildout will increase treatment capacity to 22.5 million gallons per day and utilize membrane bioreactors to continue to produce high-quality recycled water.

“IEUA has branded itself as a leader in water quality management thanks to the individual efforts of staff and their dedication to industry compliance. Sustainability, safety, and public health remain among our top priorities as we continue to optimize processes to maintain high quality effluent through regional operations. I’d like to thank NACWA for this recognition and express my gratitude to the dedicated IEUA team for their commitment to excellence,” continued Tule.
